The production of Solid State Drives (SSD) has allowed for a massive leap in performance from servers. Amazon hosts Instagram's photo-sharing service, and it is said to be able to "drive data to its computer systems on Amazon.com's EC2 service 20 times as fast with [SSDs]" (Stephen Lawson).
The best aspects of SSDs in comparison to traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDD) are: less power draw, low heat, faster file opening speeds, and even faster file copy and write speeds. With the only real downside of SSDs being that the price per gigabyte is still high (although the price has halved in the past two years) , it could be well worth the investment to ride the SSD trend to warehouse data.
An industry giant is able to afford SSDs, and the performance numbers are massive. Perhaps a switch to SSDs to warehouse data within your company could do the same.
